If there is one top with a print you should have in your closet for year-round use, it’s floral!
Floral tops add so much color and desire to an outfit, it’s no wonder they make a great staple in a capsule wardrobe year-round.
Many people think of floral designs to be only for spring and summer. But you can actually style a floral shirt in any season with a little help from supporting pieces and colors. Accessories and know-how are all you need to make an outfit POP!
Floral tops are both feminine and flattering and can soften an otherwise hard appearance. They are easily mixed and matched with many different bottom pieces like pants, leggings, shorts, skirts, etc.
Because they are so versatile, you would be doing a disservice to your wardrobe by not having floral tops in it! Floral tops also have an uncanny ability to look good on any type, shape, and size of a woman and all ages.
How To Wear Floral Tops
Like any other top, florals can come in anything – spaghetti strap, halter top, off-the-shoulder, short sleeve, long sleeve, flowy, bodysuit, button down, and tight fitting. I’ve even seen floral-printed sweaters and sweatshirts!
Floral Outfit Ideas
I will be honest with you, until the last few years, I would steer clear of floral printed tops because I didn’t know how to wear them! That’s what we’re going to focus on each of these different outfit ideas and I will share a few ways to avoid wearing floral tops, so you can steer clear of them.
- Mixing a flowy top with Spanx on the bottom
- A silk floral print cami with skinny jeans
- A silk floral skirt with a fitted T-shirt and black heels
- Floral skirt with cotton mock neck top and combat boots with optional cardigan or sweater/jacket layer for fall and winter
- Linen skirt with a floral cami for summertime
- A statement necklace with a floral blouse and skinny jeans
- A matching set of floral with the same print – don’t mix floral prints in the same outfit
I will help you understand how to wear them with black heels, skinny jeans, and statement necklaces as these are by far the easiest ways to wear a floral top!
Mixing a Flowy Top with Spanx on the Bottom
One of my favorite ways to wear a floral top with one of my favorite pairs of pants! Spanx sucks in and accentuates the bottom half of the body. Thus, a flowy top is best, especially if you are wearing it either tucked-in or untucked. This outfit allows you to have a waist and not look like a shapeless blob.
This goes for any outfit – if you wear something too baggy on one part of the body, especially if you have curves, you want to balance it out and make the other half of the body fit. Spanx can be worn year-round, and you can mix and match long-sleeve and short-sleeve tops to wear this outfit in spring, summer, fall, and even winter.
A Silk Floral Print Cami with Skinny Jeans
If you are running errands or living mom life, throw on a cardigan and some fun sneakers or sandals depending on the season. Quite honestly, this outfit works well in any season depending on where you live.
A Silk Floral Skirt with a Fitted T-shirt and Black Heels
This is a simple yet elevated look and can be achieved by wearing a silk floral, that tends to be more fitted around the booty and above the knees. You can fit it with either a midi or a maxi skirt, and a fitted t-shirt. Midi and maxi skirts are perfect for making a statement piece in your wardrobe in a floral print because you don’t have to think about the top.
I always recommend wearing a solid color or even a graphic that is white with black letters to keep things simple and really let the skirt stand out. The skirt needs to have its own moment If you choose a maxi skirt, you can tie a knot in it to show some skin or pair it with sandals to help lengthen your legs a bit more.
I tend to wear neutral shoes or ones that are close to my skin color when wearing a maxi skirt. Or even a midi floral skirt as it can make things too choppy and broken up in your outfit. I love black heels for this, especially if you have black in your floral skirt or you pair it with a black fitted t-shirt.
It helps the floral skirt stand out that much more and allows for a more cohesive outfit. This outfit I would recommend wearing in the spring, summer, and fall as winter tends to be a bit chilly in most places for skirts without tights, which you could easily add. But be sure to match them to the black heels.
Floral Skirt with Cotton Mock-Neck Top and Combat Boots with Optional Layers
Lately, this has been one of my go-to outfits for heading into fall because it’s always so hot in Arizona for much longer than it is anywhere else. To make it more of a fall look, I add a wide-brim hat and a pair of combat boots with my sleeveless black mock neck and floral printed skirt.
It’s simple, not overwhelming, and easy to throw on a cardigan in the morning and evening when needed and take it off when not. It’s a great outfit for fall and winter as most of the leg is covered and you can layer as much warmth as you’d like with it.
Linen Skirt with a Floral Cami for Summertime
Nothing says summer like linen and floral, the quintessential print and fabric. I personally prefer a bright floral for summer. As I think linen is a light tan color, which will perfectly complement each other when paired together. Linen tends to be one color in the print, but sometimes you can get it in stripes. I would stick with a solid color on the skirt unless the stripe or print on the linen is subtle or light. This will allow the bright floral cami to be the statement of the outfit and not cause confusion.
I think this outfit would work well in a variety of settings, depending on the length of the skirt. You could also switch the skirt out for a pair of linen shorts. Like the paper bag linen shorts that are becoming increasingly popular lately. I would suggest this outfit for running errands, patio lunches, or casual dinners. This is a great casual outfit that can go from spring to summer very easily and even late into summer.
A Statement Necklace with a Floral Blouse and Skinny Jeans
A great way to incorporate a statement necklace with a floral blouse and skinny jeans is to do a monochromatic outfit. This can be achieved by wearing a blue floral blouse and the same or very close matching skinny jeans. This helps not only the blue floral add detail but also lets the statement necklace do its job of being the statement. The floral can be light blue, medium blue, or even dark blue to match the different washes of skinny jeans. I personally know light and medium washes are hard for my body type to wear as I’m curvy and have thick thighs.
I need a darker print to be able to offset some of the thickness and create the illusion of thinning. (Not that this is a bad thing. I feel more confident in darker colors and feel it helps shape and accentuate in the right way.) This outfit is good for any season and can be worn for any situation you can think of. It’s a great casual outfit but can also be dressed up for a night out on the town depending on the statement necklace and shoes.
Style your next floral outfit with ease with these helpful tips!
While you can definitely opt for a matching set, I don’t recommend it. Personally, I’m not a fan of matching sets, because I like to have variety and options, so I don’t match prints or patterns often. Even if I purchase a matching set, I tend to wear the pieces separately from one another. Wearing floral prints can be an easy way to do a one-and-done outfit if you do a matching set, so that can create ease in your wardrobe.
It’s really not necessary to be afraid of wearing floral prints year-round, and I hope I’ve helped with easing your fear. I feel the easiest way to add floral into your wardrobe is with a floral top, and hope these outfit ideas have given you a place to start and explore your own floral blouse outfits.
