The family is the core element of community building, and a parenting style nourishes a child’s socialization values. It includes compassion, ethics, respect, and a sense of responsibility. When it comes to my daughters and precarious situations, I take that precious 5 seconds of deep thinking. It’s both a struggle and an opportunity to learn.

As a parent, the task of raising decent human beings with good character is on your shoulders from the second you find out you’re pregnant. You do your best so they’ll become better members of society. The idea of positive parenting is daunting but it’s not without fun moments and golden opportunities.

I’ll share with you some of the tips and tricks I learned along the way on how to raise good kids!

Create a Sense of Certainty

Your children learn when you set boundaries for them. They need to have a sense of certainty to think their actions through and mindfulness when making decisions. If there’s an opportunity, include them in the decision-making.

One example is delegating household chores. Huddle with them while creating a list, and discuss every part of the process. Explain to them why these rules are in place or what will happen if they fail to do their tasks. Raising emotionally capable kids includes encouraging them to be patient, compassionate, resourceful, and gritty.

A child learns through what they see in their environment, and it’s up to us, their parents, to help them mold their logic and ethics. Society is not without laws and structure, and in your home, make them follow a set of rules and guide them in understanding the consequences of their actions.

Encourage Learning

Kids have different learning motivations, the same way that their personalities vary. Show them that anywhere is a place for learning, it is not limited to traditional educational environments such as school. By giving them the right motivation, you are helping them enhance their passion, abilities, and desire to learn. Here are some ways that help them discover the fun of learning:

1. Let your child explore instead of imposing control.

Guide them through the process. University of Minnesota researcher Dianne Neumark-Sztainer, Ph.D., MPH, RD, said that “It doesn’t have to be a home-cooked meal. The idea is to bring people together”. Through her research, she found out that those who experience eating meals regularly in a positive atmosphere are less likely to show signs of eating disorders like vomiting, diet pills, and chronic dieting.

Allow Them To Express Their Opinion

Encourage sincere and open communication, they’ll feel comfortable expressing their thoughts. It fosters trust and minimizes negative thoughts. It will be easy for them to tell you if uncomfortable situations overwhelm or confuse them.

According to Judith Smetana, Ph.D., a professor of psychology at the University of Rochester who studies the development and family relationships, one of the common challenges in most families is the ability to “balance teen’s need for autonomy with other concerns.” In her study published in 2016, she and her colleagues found that disagreement regarding the bounds and limits of parental authority can cause bad behavior problems. It’s usually the source of adolescent-parent conflicts. As well as the use of drugs and alcohol at a young age.

Be Consistent

If you want to raise good kids, then help then become fully functioning adults. Your children will remember how you connect with them emotionally, the activities you did as a family, and the frequency of sharing a meal. It’s where consistency comes in and it matters because it indicates how you sincerely and mindfully engage. Model positive behavior and keep a positive attitude – be a role model.

Consistency comes with expectations, and children see the world through patterns. I constantly struggle with it because parenting could be so frustrating and alienating at times, but every time I try, I also feel better that I did. Parenting is the most critical public health issue faced by societies across the world. Young children need to have a nurturing relationship with their parents or guardians. Another published study claims that if children have their parents’ social support coupled with an open and positive parent-child interaction, they will most likely do better in the community.

So, next time when you’re on vacation, about to enjoy an exquisite steak, and your child suddenly decides that it’s the best time to throw a fit, give yourself a chance to pause. Think things through. Remind yourself that kids feel with big emotions, it’s up to you how you will help them navigate them. With all the resources available on positive parenting, look at your role holistically. In essence, you are a teacher, a nurse, a transformational leader, an inspiration, and an ultimate supporter.

How Does Responsible Parenting Affect a Child’s Physical Health?

Studies have shown that responsible parenting has a positive impact on the physical health of children, including improved sleep and fewer behavioral problems. Responsible parents are able to spend more time with their children, which may help them regulate their emotions. Furthermore, responsible parents who help their children with good behavior are also raising kids who will be successful as adults and feel like they can succeed in life.

Responsible parents are also better able to help their children learn how to control their emotions and understand how other people feel. Helicopter parents tend to hover over their children too much, but if you can strike a balance between being present for your child and giving them space when they need it, then you’ll be teaching your kids how to take responsibility for themselves—which is arguably one of the most important things you can do as a parent.

Being a parent is a commitment.

You set the foundation so your kids will have a positive outlook on life and healthy emotional well-being. You are their provision of support – give them positive affirmations, provide them with respect, protect them, and convey your love to them. As they grow, you should develop that depth of knowledge on how to best support them in every milestone of their lives. And it’s never too early to start developing that positive psychology.

While they’re little, time seems to be so slow and their dependence too high. However, that could all change. In a blink of an eye, you are releasing them to the world, and hopefully, with the innate pride that you’ve raised a good person who will do positive and great things.

Women-owned businesses in Arizona have been on my mind for a long time. I could even include myself and so many others in this post, but I will save that for another time. This idea came about due to the impact COVID-19 had and is still having on so many businesses. I’ve personally interacted with and have gotten to know the owners of each of these woman-owned businesses and I’ve even shopped in them too.

As a woman, a mother of girls, and an entrepreneur, I believe it’s incredibly important to support women and their dreams. What better way to show my girls that anything they can dream of is possible than to support other women who are doing the exact same thing?

As a host of short-term rental properties, what better way to share our local economy with out-of-town visitors than to offer them a local experience filled with the heart and soul of a woman who lives where they are visiting? I can’t think of a better way, which is why I’m compiling this list to help not only my guests but as a reference for locals to also learn about some new businesses they may not have known about previously.

Cute little boutique in Glendale that’s been in business for over 15 years! They carry some of my favorite brands including Chaser, Good Hyman, Z Supply, Gorjana, etc, and have candles, notebooks, jewelry, and shoes. The pricing is a bit more high-end, but they always have sale racks and have such good customer service! Lovebox Floral

Preserved floral arrangements and single roses, need I say more? Ok, I will, but Sasha and her team are so easy to work with, create some of the most beautifully fresh and preserved arrangements, and create an experience you will remember long after the initial gifting wears off. The preserved flowers last well over a year, and still look as great as the day you receive them. Sasha always has a vision and can create from as many or few details as you give her! Pamprd Soul

Lanna is one of the nicest people you could meet! She’s taking the concept of a nail salon and creating a community. She has partnered with other local businesses to have a boutique shopping experience inside the salon, has a membership program so you don’t have to think about getting your mani/pedis scheduled like I have a hard time remembering to do, has personal rooms where estheticians can work, and so many great things in the works! I feel like an actual person when I walk in and feel comfortable taking my girls along with me, not just a number like many other places. When people move to Arizona from the Midwest, I often hear that the hospitality isn’t here, and I believe it.

However, when you visit Pamprd Soul, Lanna, and her team honestly care and bring that hospitality to you from the moment you open the door. And the decor inside is so cute too! The two store locations in the valley are a total VIBE! I first happened into the Old Town Scottsdale location after seeing their converted Uhaul truck out and about. They have since outgrown that location and moved into another spot down the street and have expanded into the Scottsdale Quarter for the second location. This shop is a “street meets sweet” style and I love a lot of their clothing. They are a no-BS brand, and it comes straight from Susie, the owner. I respect the hustle and attitude so much! Woman and veteran-owned, fellow girl mama, Kayla and her two other estheticians are magic workers on your skin! Book one appointment with the girls and you will be hooked for life! I met Kayla over 2 years ago and this is her second feature on my blog! Her first is HERE. Their signature ‘No Filter Facial’ brought my dry, tired, mom skin back to life and made my eyes feel alive again! And the DMK facial is one of the coolest facial experiences you could ever have! They are located inside a medical spa and right near Pamprd Soul, so you could book yourself an entire day and hop from one place to the next! Cocco Fleur Boutique

Brittany is the sweetest mama of 2 littles and a military wife. She works on her business out of her home, does markets when those are allowed, and will ship your order to you wherever you live in the cutest packaging! Her specialty is holidays and small batches. She makes items to order, so she doesn’t keep a ton of inventory around, which I love as a business person and running lean! All of her designs are her own or she collaborates with other local small shops, and the material she finds for the shirts is soft like butter! Boutique short and long-term rental experiences are available in North Scottsdale, specifically close to Kierland and the Scottsdale Quarter. Bree is the gal behind this cute little Bungalow that offers spray tanning in Old Town Scottsdale. I believe she may still be offering mobile tanning if you make an appointment. This is one of the best small-batch produced jerky ever, per my husband! He has tried every flavor the owner, Veronica, makes and loves them all! I’m not a jerky eater, so I can’t tell you how it does taste, but what I can tell you is how fast he eats them. The bag is usually gone in one sitting, which isn’t common for Steve. Easily the best-filled cookie in the valley! The flavor combinations they come up with will just blow your mind! These are individually wrapped and have all the ingredients and nutrition facts on each of the cookies, so these make great gifts for a party. They are individually sold or can be bought in a dozen for a bit of a discount. Pickup is offered and delivery within a certain radius is offered. Cute pop-up events with local vendors. This event started as a weekly market in Gilbert but has since shifted to have an online presence that can be shipped anywhere in the US. The makers range from cookies, jerky, toys, and clothing, to photo backdrops to coffee/tea mugs to baby items. The gals who run these events are some of the nicest ladies, and I love chatting with them so much. Check out their Instagram to keep up with the latest events and happenings.

Edgy Coffee shop on a busy little street in sleepy North Scottsdale Plaza. The woman behind this shop is a college student and a young 24 years old! She opened this shop in May of 2020, amid the global pandemic, and is thriving! The girls and I love that we have a local coffee shop that makes some of our favorite drinks, has ample seating, and we can bring our pups to the shop with us! Talk to a friend or family member, or seek professional help on remaining positive if needed. Sometimes all it takes is someone else’s perspective to help you see that it’s not that bad after all. If this person is negative at all, it’s best to stay away from them and anyone or anything negative as that can keep you from staying positive yourself. People who avoid negativity most of the time tend to be happier.

How To Hydrate Your Skin From The Inside Out

If you follow along on Instagram, I talk a lot about Celery Juice and how it helps hydrate your skin from the inside out. It does this among many other things. I highly recommend you eat the items below organically as they will serve your body best. But if you can’t get organic, do the best you can. I can tell when I need to increase the healthy items in my diet and lifestyle as my skin gets very dry and cracks. Hopefully, even though there are so many different skin types, this isn’t something you deal with. But I’m excited to share what I’ve learned along the way!

How To Hydrate Your Skin From The Inside Out

Avoid inflammatory foods.

I have always struggled with dry, irritated skin, and then moving to the desert was a whole differentcelery juice | How To Hydrate Your Skin From The Inside Out struggle. I believe it starts with the diet, and ensuring you don’t eat foods that cause inflammation. Inflammatory foods cause your body to swell and store water, making it unavailable for other natural processes. We all love steak, bread, and sweets, but foods rich in fat, carbs, and sugar can hinder your skin body from hydrating properly.

Drink plenty of water.

Along with diet, drinking lots of water is absolutely key. With the dry air in the desert, dehydration happens much faster than anything else. Try to drink between 2 and 3 liters of water each day to maintain hydrated skin.

Exercise regularly.

Exercising is a great way to detox anything needing to get out of your body affecting your skin. You may not believe this, but exercise helps you stay stress free and helps your skin get the hydration it needs. But, you have to drink enough water when you are exercising and most people don’t think they will have dehydrated skin when working out.

Just remember to always wash your face immediately after working out to prevent buildup and breakouts. I recommend using a gentle product that contains hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid works within your skin to help water molecules bind to collagen better. Thus, trapping water within the skin. And, always follow up with a moisturizer.

Take Cold Showers.

It’s hard to imagine anyone not enjoying a hot, steamy overly long shower. But what if I told you hot showers can be detrimental to hydrating your skin? It’s true, hot showers and baths can inflame your skin, making it difficult for you to get the natural oils, fats, and proteins needed to promote healthy skin. In fact, showers or baths that are too hot can cause redness, itchiness, or peeling… almost like a sunburn.

Eat hydrating foods.

Other than drinking plenty of plain water, you can also give your body water through food. Try and incorporate hydrating foods into your diet to prevent signs of dehydration. In fact, there are tons of fruits and vegetables contain water that can add to what you already drink, further promoting skin hydration. Plus, most foods rich in vitamins and minerals also very hydrating and promote even better skin health.

Hydrating Fruit And Vegetables

Celery Juice

I learned this from Anthony William, otherwise known as Medical Medium. Celery Juice is key tomedical medium anthony william helping reduce inflammation, detox the body of unknown toxins that cause trouble on the immune system. It has so many anti inflammatory properties. And, it helps to create healthy skin from the inside out. It’s recommended to consume 16 – 32 ounces of fresh celery juice on an empty stomach every day.

The celery salts in Celery Juice help retain moisture and help you stay hydrated more than anything else available to you nutritionally. Skin’s natural function is to provide a moisture barrier that the celery juice helps to keep working properly. Skin is our largest organ, so it’s super important to keep your skin cells hydrated properly. So aside from drinking plenty of water, try drinking lots of celery juice too!

Iceberg Lettuce

I think we can all agree that iceberg lettuce tastes a little bit like just plain water. That’s because it is! In fact, this lettuce variety is made up of 96% water, making it one of the most hydrating vegetables out there. If you’re in need of an extra boost of hydration, grab a iceberg salad. The best part is that you can add other ingredients to your salad that also improve skin health or that are extra hydrating. Think red or yellow bell peppers, broccoli, tomatoes, onions, apples, cucumbers, and more. Since I do deal with dry skin, I try to incorporate salads as often as possible.

Cucumbers

Growing up, my dad always called cucumbers, pickles because that’s how he wanted them made. I didn’t know then that they were actually cucumbers and how good the fresh version actually is! If you want to hydrate at the deepest possible level in your body, cucumbers are the ticket. They also have a cooling effect on the body, making them the perfect summer snack.

If you eat cucumbers on a daily basis, they can help cool and reverse liver damage dating back 10 to 15 years — many people who have this damage don’t even know! If you can’t eat cucumbers whole, fresh cucumber juice is the best rejuvenation tonic in the world. It contains electrolyte compounds. And can help reduce fevers in both adults and children. If this wasn’t enough, cucumbers are rich in vitamins A, B, and C, and support digestion. Fruits and vegetables are the best things you can have to help increase hydration as they are made of mostly water.

Zucchini

It only makes sense that if cucumbers are super hydrating, that zucchini are too. Just one cup of zucchini contains around 90% water, plus a plethora of other healthy nutrients as well. Including but not limited to, plenty of fiber, vitamins B6 and C, and protein. The most effective way to add zucchini to your diet is by steaming it. While baked zucchini is very delicious, baking the zucchini literally bakes the water right out. Leaving less for you get when you eat it.

Sweet Potato

So many people shy away from the sweet potato because they think it’s a starch or nightshade that will hurt them. In reality it’s so great for your skin. This beautiful root is full of vitamins, minerals, carotenoids, beta-carotene, lycopene and other nutrients. Which makes it perfect for daily consumption to improve skin health and glow from the inside out. Sweet potatoes are also abundant in amino acids, which can help draw radiation from the body. Along with fighting off skin cancers, breast cancer, reproductive cancers, stomach cancer, intestinal cancer, esophageal cancer, and rectal cancer. (Medical Medium Life Changing Foods book citation)

Sweet potatoes are especially important for women to include in our diets to ward off anything we don’t want in our bodies. As well as for our skin. If you have trouble sleeping, try eating a sweet potato to help increase neurotransmitter production, thus helping you prevent signs of dehydration from the inside out.

Oranges

Citrus fruits, such as oranges, clementines, and lemons, are all water rich foods. For example, oranges are 86% water and clementines are 87% water. If possible, try to incorporate a citrus fruit into your diet each and every day. Either plain, in your yogurt, or in a smoothie. I can always tell a different when I follow this advice and make citrus a grocery staple. In addition to water, citrus fruits contain tons if vitamin C. Which is great for the skin and supporting the skin barrier as part of the immune system. Citrus fruits also contain good amounts of vitamin B6, fiber, and calcium.

Apples

The skin is the first place to look when you have something wrong in your body. In addition to these suggestions, it’s important to use a sunscreen to protect your skin on the outside so the inside has its best chance to thrive. Apples are the ultimate toxin and debris cleanser in the colon. Which is where most of the skin inflaming irritants hide.

If you want to hydrate and make your skin better from the inside, apples are the first step to making that happen. Apples are also hydrating on a deep cellular level. They provide trace minerals and electrolytes which are helpful in the body rehydrating after exercise or any stress. They help ensure the natural barrier function of skin stays working properly, or helps support it when it is working extra hard.

Strawberries

Yum. Who doesn’t love a good handful of strawberries every now and then? Strawberries are great for both hydration and skin health. And if you can, you should keep them stocked. Strawberries are super sweet snack, and are made up of around 90% water. In addition to water, they also contain fiber and a slew of antioxidants to fight free-radical damage. Even better, they are very low in calories. Eat them plain, dip them in dark chocolate, or add them to your next salad or smoothie. There are really so many options with strawberries, making them the perfect rehydrating snack.

Melons

All melons are basically purified sugar water. But the good kind of sugar that helps your body get back electrolytes and replenish the water loss we experience daily. Melons of all kinds are especially beneficial if you are like me and struggle with dry skin year-round. I know when I need to consume more than 1 cup of melons a day, because my skin will get very dry and itchy. Melons are predigested so they make a really great option when you are in dire need of something to nourish your skin. Or, if you are on the verge of dehydration.

Peaches

Made up of 88% water, peaches are an excellent snack that can help you stay hydrated. Plus, what’s better than a nice, ripe peach on a hot summer day? This yummy fruit also contains skin-supporting ingredients. Like vitamins C, A, E, and K, and even some potassium and phosphorous, too. Like strawberries, peaches are really easy to add to any diet plan. Eat one plain, add them to your next yogurt or salad, or make a delicious peach salsa with chips.

Soup

Imagine making a soup. You start with almost all water, right? Then, you add in everything else. This is why soups are one of the most hydrating foods to consume. If you can stomach a warm soup in the summer that is. When making soup, keep in mind that extra ingredients like salt, bouillon cubes, and certain types of salsa, can add too much salt to the soup. And thus, reduce the hydrating effects.

Instead, add natural spices and ingredients that support skin health. Soup ingredients that contain vitamins and minerals that support skin health include: bone broth, fatty fish, sweet potatoes, red or yellow bell peppers, broccoli, tomatoes, and more.

Coconut Water

While technically a drink, I’ll include it anyway. If you’re feeling dehydrated and you want to rehydrate as quick as possible, grab some coconut water. Coconut water is more than just water, its water + electrolytes. And, its much healthier than the typical sports drink. Plus, coconut water contains vitamin B2, vitamin B3, and vitamin C, all of which support skin health. Especially when it comes to reducing fine lines and wrinkles, and improving skin elasticity. In this case, its very important to make sure the coconut water is organic, or else it may contain added sugars and salts that will do you no good.

Mainstream foods for hydrating skin from the inside out

You may be asking why I didn’t include olive oil or flaxseed in my recommended foods to hydrate skin and there’s good reason. I personally have tried to use olive oil but find it ends up clogging or causing more issues than I started with. I also found I relied too heavily on the oil. I found I didn’t include the other good foods more in my eating. Flaxseeds are a great filler and good for your hair and nails, as well as skin. But again, we want to add more hydration. And the foods listed above are very hydrating and not dry. I also want to point out that my recommendations are based on my own skin type, but that doesn’t mean it won’t work for yours!

If you want to follow in the mainstream foods, you can add in healthy fats. Good fats like avocado, seeds and walnuts, and fatty fish like salmon to still get some of the hydration. Herbal teas like hibiscus are best remedies if you wanted to have some sort of hot beverage still but not get the dehydration of coffee or caffeine. There are also natural oils like soybean oil or avocado oil that you can also use to help battle skin dehydration.

As summer starts here in Arizona, I will be listening to my own advice and increasing my intake of Mainstream foods for hydrating skinthese wonderful, skin hydrating foods to ensure I am able to hydrate from the inside out.

I don’t want to put a bandaid on the situation and then be embarrassed when I can’t wear sandals or my skin is flaky from the dryness. You shouldn’t either.

Minimalism has been the talk of the town lately. It’s the in-trend approach to life that many people are considering practicing. And those who have already practiced it have promised that they would not let it go. 

But have you wondered, why this rage? I mean it’s just an approach, a concept. Well let me correct you, it’s not just an approach, it’s not just a concept. It’s LIFE CHANGING. 

Less is more, savings, frugality, simplicity, zero wastage are all the pillars of minimalism. Interestingly, these principles are not new and exclusive to minimalism. Yet surprisingly, these values and principles are what most of us follow and believe in. So, if you happen to be on the list, you are already a minimalist! 

Minimalism gives you more time and space to do the things you want — travel, experiences, quiet time, quality time, etc. These are just a few things you can gain with adopting a minimalist lifestyle!

If someone asks you, would a million dollar and a large home with all the amenities would make you happy, your answer would be a straight NO. All because as minimalists, you don’t find happiness in things and possessions. For you, happiness lies with people you love.

You go out there in the world, live in the moment, take time out for things you like to do, and all that what counts as peace and happiness for you. When you stand for minimalism, you stand by a zero-wastage principle because you care a lot about the environment. You anticipate how your one decision or consumption would affect the environment, and you make a wise decision accordingly.

If you are a Monica Geller or Sheldon Cooper when it comes to organization, that my friend is enough for us to declare you a minimalist at heart.

As a minimalist, your goal is never solely to eliminate things from your home but to give them away to see how it can change the lives of others, and perhaps spread a smile on their faces. Consequently, you never think twice about donating things you know would be much more useful for someone else.

We are no stranger to human propensity of having a vast wardrobe. However, if you happen to be someone who can go live their life on just 5-6 pairs of clothes, you deserve the title.

A lot of people worry about their credit card bills before making purchases; however if you worry about the space it will obstruct or how you wished to own fewer things, that counts as minimalism.

If you’re like me, you enjoy having a lot of options when it comes to your wardrobe. But after a while, all of those clothes can start to add up both in terms of cost and clutter. That’s where living a minimalist lifestyle comes in. A capsule wardrobe is one way to embrace minimalism and save money at the same time.

1. You believe that less is more. And that intentional living is key. This means being purposeful and intentional about the things you allow into your life, including material possessions.

2. You’ve decluttered your home and gotten rid of anything that doesn’t serve a purpose or bring you joy. For you, living with less means having more space to breathe and move freely. It also means having less to worry about and taking better care of the things you do have.

3. You don’t believe that stuff equals happiness. You think the Pursuit of Happiness is a bit misguided. Instead, you focus on experiences over things and on living in the present moment.

This doesn’t mean you don’t ever buy anything new it just means that your purchases are intentional and based on need rather than want.
