How to Style Bike Shorts 10 Ways

How to Style Bike Shorts 10 Ways

If you haven’t heard of bike shorts yet, let me tell you about one of my favorite outfit ideas for summer. I played volleyball in my middle and high school years, and what we now call bike shorts, we simply called “spandex” back then. I know, very general. This was before leggings were a thing and cooler than jeans.

Bike shorts come in 4-inch, 7-inch, and 11-inch lengths and are usually seen on cyclists riding bikes. Sometimes they have pockets, sometimes not. Sometimes they have a print, and sometimes they are a solid color. Many celebrities have been spotted sporting them recently. So now, I’m going to show you how YOU can create the same looks you see online!

How to Style Bike Shorts 10 Ways

I like bike shorts because they are super easy to wear, and below I’m going to show you how to style bike shorts in 4 ways! Let’s go!

As Loungewear

By far, these are the easiest and most comfy clothes to wear around the house or to run errands. I like to pair mine with a sweatshirt and slippers to help keep me warm, but not too hot. It is the ultimate comfort outfit when you just need a day off.

These TopShop biker shorts add a bit of style to any outfit with the animal print. I usually pair it with a neutral or solid sweatshirt to keep things balanced. The Madewell slippers I’m wearing are so soft and comfy! They complete biker shorts outfits along with a tank or tee under the sweatshirt. How to Style Bike Shorts

Embrace Athleticism

Embrace the sporty look by pairing your bike sports with a comfy sports bra or crop top along with sneakers or sporty sandals. Adding a baseball cap or another sport-type hat can help to enhance the athletic aesthetic. If it’s a little chilly, you can layer up with a zip-up sports jacket or sweatshirt.

This outfit is perfect for a day running errands or for a casual brunch with friends. It is definitely one of my go-tos!

Opt for Bohemian Vibes

Pair some funky patterned bike shorts with a flow blouse tucked into them. Layer with a crochet vest or kimono. To finish off the look, add some sandals or ankle boots and accessorize with a fringed, cross-body bag. This look is easy and great for festivals, outdoor markets, or a relaxed day with loved ones.

Graphic Tees And Biker Shorts

This style will be on repeat for this summer! I love the ease of this outfit! Living in Arizona, I’m always on the hunt for an outfit to keep me cool, yet stylish. Take this trend and twin it with your littles, or take it and make it streetwear with a shoulder bag, your favorite mask, and kicks.

Or, take it on a walk with your pooch and family for some fresh air. Play around with the lengths of the shorts to see what works for you too. I love the 4-inch option but sometimes the 7 or 11-inch options are better, depending on the outfit.

Black is and has been a staple in my closet, especially when it comes to my thick thighs. I find that if I want to make them appear slimmer, the long options are my best bet.

Places to shop for bike shorts are NikeNordstrom, Fabletics, American Eagle, Target, and several others. If you want options that stretch or those that will “hold you in” I recommend more workout-style brands to wear with your biker shorts. If you want shorts that are a little more relaxed, go for the cotton options. I prefer the brands that are meant for working out, but the animal print ones are Topshop and I own a few from American Eagle and Target too.

Accessorise Your Fit

Accessories play a really important role in all outfits. If you don’t accessorise right, your look won’t be complete. Consider adding a little belt bag, also known as a fanny pack, worn around your waist or across your chest for a trendy and functional accessory.

Sunglasses are yet another way to make a statement. Choose a pair with bold frames to elevate your look with some luxury appeal. You can experiment with a range of different accessories to see what you like best!

Business Casual

Never did I think I could use the term “business casual” with bike shorts, but it’s possible! Choose bike shorts in a plain, flat color and pair them with a crisp, button down shirt tucked in. Over the top, add a nice blazer. Loafers or pointy-toed shoes are the best way to finish off this kind of outfit.

Dressed Up with a Tank

This is a great option if you want to dress up your black bike shorts to take them out for a girl’s day or date night. I prefer the longer length, either 7 or 11 inches, for this option as I feel it’s a bit more dressy. I put on a plain but slightly detailed tank and did a little tuck in the front. And I love the EverEve option because they hold up and are also priced right. I also slipped on a pair of Sam Edelman slide sandals to complete the outfit.

Don’t Be Afraid to Experiment

Experimenting is a super fun and crucial element of choosing an outfit. Don’t be afraid to try out some new textures, colors, and patterns. I never used to be a cheetah print girl, but when it comes to my bike shorts, I LOVE to experiment with new things. It helps me escape my comfort zone and feel confident stepping out with a new look.

Dressed up with a Cardigan

A cardigan is always on deck here in Arizona because it’s over 100 outside but usually below 80 inside! I love the option of a long cardigan or kimono to complete the dressy look without much effort. I kept this outfit simple because these are most likely pieces you have in your closet right now, and you’d be able to wear this tomorrow without much effort. The cardigan or kimono makes this a simple outfit you can take from brunch with the girls to date night with your spouse.

Add Casual Layers

For a laid-back and effortless look, try adding some casual layers to your outfit. You can layer your bike shorts with oversized graphic tees, hoodies, or a denim-look shirt. if you prefer something a little more fitted, feel free to tie a knot in the front of your oversized tee to show off your waistline. This casual, layered approach is ideal for weekends or casual outings.

How Should Bike Shorts Fit?

Choosing and fitting your bike shorts properly is a super important part of pulling these outfits off. Here are some of my favourite tips for fitting bike shorts to you and your outfit!

Snug, but not constricting.

Your bike shorts should be a good, snug fit, but shouldn’t make you feel uncomfortable or constricted. This also helps to prevent chafing or any discomfort.

Make sure the waistband is suitable.

Making sure you pick a waistband that suits your body type is super important! For example, I LOVE a thick waistband that keeps my shorts in place and doesn’t dig into my skin.

Choose the right length.

The length of the shorts will greatly effect your comfort and style! Make sure you choose a length that goes with your outfit and makes you feel good about yourself. This tip is all about personal preference.
